October 20 is World Osteoporosis Day so we thought it was a good opportunity to think about our bone health. Worldwide, one in three women and one in five men aged 50 years and over will suffer an osteoporotic fracture. Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and fragile, so that they break easily – even as a result of a minor fall, a bump, a sneeze, or a sudden movement. Fractures caused by osteoporosis can be life-threatening and a major cause of pain and long-term disability.
Can osteoporosis and fractures ne prevented? Yes, if action is taken early!
There are many proactive measures we can take to ensure healthy bones and a fracture free future and these include exercise, good nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle. Risk factors include a family history of osteoporosis and some medications can also affect bone health.
If you have any questions regarding osteoporosis and think you may be at a high risk, book an appointment and discuss these with one of our experienced doctors.
